Norske Skog Bruck

S&T Delivers the IT Infrastructure Solution

The Norske Skog factory in Bruck an der Mur has belonged to the Norwegian Norske Skog company since 1996. Norske Skog is the largest manufacturer of newsprint in the world and one of the largest producers of magazine paper – annually manufacturing 380,000 tons of wood-based paper for printing - newsprint and coated magazine papers - on two paper machines in Bruck, Upper Styria, as well as the necessary wood pulp and de-inked pulp produced from recycled paper.

The challenge

The continuous availability of production and related systems is essential for plant operation: a system failure would quickly lead to the paper machines being switched off and the associated high downtime costs. Before the project started, the IT infrastructure for the production and production-related areas consisted of separate heterogeneous systems that were old and no longer had the benefit of maintenance contracts. This meant that the systems had low availability and low disaster tolerance levels.

The contract therefore was to plan and install a modern IT infrastructure based
on future-proof industry standards that would form a basis for production
and related processes.

The project

S&T Austria planned and installed a central IT system for production planning and the order processing of paper machines and associated logistics. An HP UX ServiceGuard Cluster for the Mill Execution System as well as for the Logistics and Communications Application was installed in two computing centers, together with an HP UX database server with Oracle RAC and a scalable active-active database as well as Oracle DataGuard. The solution was rounded off with a test system and a five-year 24x7 service agreement.

Alongside the requisite high level of availability and disaster tolerance, this new IT infrastructure solution provides Norske Skog with higher system performance, greatly reduced failure risk and a future-proof, maintainable and flexible system. In addition, S&T Austria provides Norske Skog with 24-hour professional support.
