An operation move and with it the accompanying reduction in space capacity in 2004 gave Energie AG an occasion to begin the virtualisation of their server structure. Jointly with S&T Austria the requirements were analysed and subsequently the project was begun. The first step was to purchase and install two physical server systems, which virtualised about 70 servers. In phase two of the implementation, in 2005, two additional servers were bought, expanding the virtualisation to 100 servers. Again in the last phase of the endeavour another two servers were put into service. Recently the virtualisation of about 140 servers was completed. “The VMWare installation at Energie AG is one of the largest in Austria. It contains 48 CPUs and around 140 virtualised servers. The newly completed server landscape provides the foundation for all future server expansion”, explains Georg Komornyik, Managing Director, S&T Austria.

Lower costs, improved efficiency
“We are very pleased with this project that has already paid for itself in cost savings. The costs for server rooms, air-conditioning, electricity and data connections alone have been significantly reduced. And we’re using our servers much better than before”, adds Jürgen Kehl, who is responsible for operations at Energie AG. In many organisations, the actual operational capacity of the engaged servers is low, due to the use of servers for varied applications with technology incompatibilities making work difficult if not impossible. The virtual server can increase performance significantly. Combining applications is no problem and the time required to expand the server is greatly reduced. A new installation of a physical server takes four to six weeks, while a virtual one requires just 30 minutes. Executing tests is also less complicated with virtual servers.
