S&T participates in the WiMAX Network Development in Ukraine

Project for Ukrainian High Technologies

08 May 2007. Austria – Ukraine. S&T Ukraine has been building the first WiMAX* network in the Ukraine for Ukrainian High Technologies, the country's largest mobile broadband provider. The WiMAX network, marketed as 'AlterNet', was launched in Kiev and Kharkov in 2005. The aim is to cover commercial use in all the 27 regions of the Ukraine by the end of 2007.
Ukrainian High Technologies Ltd, one of the largest telecommunications providers in Ukraine, specialises in wireless broadband services. In 2005, it began to build the first Ukrainian WiMAX network and aims to offer WiMAX AlterNet throughout the whole of the Ukraine by 2007. S&T Ukraine was assigned to start development of the WiMAX radio network (Alvarion) and the corresponding backbone network (Cisco). The project commenced in the spring of 2005 and is now successfully up and running. 'S&T Soft-Tronik Ukraine has some of the best wireless specialists available and many years of experience with WiMAX systems. They developed the largest WiFi network within the Ukraine and are also involved in several wireless projects for some operators and enterprises. In addition, we have some outstanding Cisco experts working on various projects in countries where the S&T Group has a presence,' explains Christian Rosner, CEO of S&T AG.

WiMAX: Technology with Potential
WiMAX consists of high-speed radio technology for high-speed broadband transfers for use mainly in regions where no conventional broadband supply is possible. This technology allows for transfer speeds of up to 50 Mbit/s within a radius of up to 50 km. According to a 2006 study by Steria Mummert Consulting, WiMAX will have replaced DSL by 2008. Mummert experts estimate that WiMAX will have a market turnover of approx. € 3 billion by 2009. Ukrainian High Technologies' AlterNet is not just the first WiMAX network in the Ukraine, but also the first commercial WiMAX network across the whole CIS region. Business is currently booming given that the company owns exclusive frequency band licences. S&T Ukraine is one of the leading partners of WiMAX equipment manufacturer Alvarion. S&T Ukraine has not only been responsible for the initial planning and building the AlterNet network, but also for staff training, supply, assembly, installation of hard and software, the node equipment and maintenance. 'We have ambitious plans for our WiMAX network. S&T Ukraine has definitely proved to be a competent and reliable partner for network planning and maintenance', Yuri Chuikov, General Director of Ukrainian High Technologies.
